Workshop by: Dr.Andry Vleeming

Mechanisms and Evidence based Diagnosis and Rehabilitation

”An evidence based course on clinical anatomy, biomechanics and effective rehabilitation.”

Over this course Dr. Vleeming will present his research work and distil a 33 years career into a digestible weekend workshop that promises a new understanding and a set of new skills for practice.

This course will be especially related to better diagnostics and treatment of lumbo-pelvic girdle patients. The course has both theoretical clinical content as well as hands on demonstrations on diagnostics and treatment.

Dr. Vleeming will show both the clinical research and his clinical work with patients.

  • Provide a critical insight into the complex anatomy and biomechanics of the lumbo-pelvic area
  • To develop a strong biomedical basis towards the examination, evaluation and physical treatment of lumbar spine neuro-musculoskeletal pain disorders
  • Present a clinical reasoning model that enables us to analyse the mechanism behind lumbar and pelvic dysfunctions
  • Disseminate new data about rehabilitation strategies.

Prof Andry Vleeming, PhD

Dr. Vleeming is a professor at the Ghent Medical University at the department of rehabilitation and Kinesiotherapy and visiting professor in Clinical Anatomy at the University of New England, Maine USA. He received his Ph.D. at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands, with specialty in anatomy, biomechanics and radiology of the human pelvis and spine.

He founded the research group musculoskeletal system in 1990 at the same University to improve the diagnostic understanding of patients with chronic lumbar and pelvic pain. He also co-founded the Interdisciplinary world congress on lumbo-pelvic pain under the auspices of the University of San Diego.

He founded in cooperation with the Dutch Government, a specialized rehabilitation hospital for severe chronic lumbar and pelvic pain patients. For his work he was honoured a knighthood by the Queen of the Netherlands. He lectures worldwide about the clinical anatomy of chronic low back & pelvic pain.

Dr. Vleeming is the Chairman of the World Congress on Low Back and Pelvic Pain and one of the authors of the European Guidelines of Pelvic Girdle Pain (2008). This has led to many publications in Spine Journals concerning the function and diagnosis of the pelvis and spine.

He started cooperation with the North American Spine Association to supervise the world congress on lumbo pelvic pain. Dr Vleeming’s research is focussed on understanding chronic lumbo pelvic pain and to develop evidence based rehabilitation for chronic pain patients. World- wide he is working together as an expert in diagnosing patients with severe chronic pelvic girdle and spinal pain.

Dr Vleeming has written more than 59 peer reviewed articles in leading musculoskeletal journals. He is author of 15 books on musculoskeletal system and editor of 20 books an 18 book chapters.
