Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPVV)

WHAT IS IT?
  • A common cause of dizziness
  • A balance disorder affecting the inner ear
  • It responds favourably to treatment/exercises
  • Benign means it is of no danger to health
SYMPTOMS
  • Dizziness or Vertigo, light-headedness imbalance, nausea
  • They occur at certain movements e.g. looking up, bending over, turning
CAUSES
  • Mostly it occurs for no known reason
  • Other times, it is related to migraines, head injuries, ear viruses, minor strokes or after surgery
WHY?
  • It is due to looses particles in the inner ear sending false signals to the brain about your body’s movement

TREATMENT
  • Repositioning manoeuvres by vestibular therapists (from trained doctors and physiotherapists)
  • Vestibular rehabilitation exercises (from trained Physiotherapists)
